FiamesThe hamlet of Fiames, located about 4 km north of the town of Cortina, rises along the trunk of the State Road SS 51 of Alemagna that - starting from the Ampezzo district - heads towards the Val Pusteria (Puster Valley). The landscape is very different from the classic Ampezzo landscape: Fiames is, in fact, set in the narrow valley carved by the Boite stream, hemmed in between the Pomagagnon massifs to the east, and the Tofana Terza to the west. As a result, this area is usually more shady, damper and cooler than the Ampezzo Valley (Conca Ampezzana), which opens with its very wide spaces only a couple of kilometres further south. Despite its population of 21 inhabitants in all, this locality is quite popular because of the sports competitions that it constantly hosts: football, athletics and cross-country skiing are the peak activities. A long cycle path was created on the site where the Fiames station once stood, while in winter it becomes a renowned cross-country ski run.
