Cinque TorriThe Cinque Torri (lit. Five Towers) are a small mountain range belonging to the Nuvolau chain, within the Ampezzo Dolomites, extending to the north-west of San Vito di Cadore and to the south-west of Cortina d'Ampezzo. Like all mountain formations of the area, they are composed of Dolomia rock, which is characterised by a particular pale grey colour hue. The chain is made up of five rock spurs, whence its name, at a maximum altitude of 2,361 metres. This area was the scene of bitter clashes between Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops during the Great War and still today preserves numerous testimonies of the battles and the war constructions erected by the Italian Royal Army. Only recently, following a renovation and enhancement operation, has it been possible to create interesting historical routes: in the Lagazuoi-Cinque Torri area, the largest museum dedicated to the First World War was built, consisting of the open-air museums of Lagazuoi, Cinque Torri and Sasso di Stria and the museum of the Forte Tre Sassi.
